A letter from Executive Director, Heather Denman, 3/17/19:
“Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham has been monitoring the situation closely and has taken every measure to ensure the health and safety of those we serve as well as our employees who support them. We have made every effort to continue the provision of services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who participate in our community engagement, day support and in-home and respite services. Yesterday, we were informed by the city that the Lucy F Simms Continuing Education Center is being shuttered through March 27 [now April 23rd], at which time a decision will be made to reopen or remain closed.
We have contacted families, and are checking in with everyone to ensure that they have the supports they need at home or in their group homes. We are working on ways to provide in-home care and supports to those that need them while mitigating risk and keeping our consumers, employees and community safe. Today is our last day in the facility for the time being however, we will continue to work remotely and provide information and referrals, and advocacy. When calling The Arc, you will be forwarded to our mobile phones through the staff directory. If you have any questions or need support please email me, Heather Denman at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (540) 407-9856. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay strong. We will get through this together.”
