ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION
The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham has been working to meet the needs of individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities since 1962. Our goal is simple: To assist you in finding the best services within our community for your special needs individual.
The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, veteran status or status as a qualified disabiled or handicapped individual.
Our Mission
The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is part of the nation's largest volunteer organization devoted solely to the welfare of persons with intellectual disabilities.
Members include parents, professionals, persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, and concerned citizens.
The staff and volunteers work to minimize the effects of intellectual disabilities. Intellectual disabilities should not be confused with mental illness.
Our Mission Statement is basic:
The Arc is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.
We believe every person with an intellectual disability has the right to live, learn and work in the most normal and least restrictive environment possible.
Agency Profile
The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities regardless of age and degree of disability.
We are members of The Arc of the United States and The Arc of Virginia. The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is also a United Way community partner.
The Arc Board of Directors consists of parents, professionals, interested citizens, and consumers.
The Op Shop
The Op Shop is our largest and best known program. The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham started the Op Shop in 1983 to fulfill the unmet need for a day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities whose age and functioning levels prevented them from qualifying for other services.
Clients of the Op Shop have the opportunity to earn a paycheck by making high quality craft items, preparing bulk mailings, doing small assembly jobs, and sharpening life skills.
Op Shop clients give back to the community each year by volunteering their time at local establishments such as the SPCA, local thrift stores, Avante Nursing Home, Massanutten Regional Library, and other local volunteer sites.
