Casual Dress Code Guidelines

Because all casual clothing is not suitable for work, these guidelines shall help you determine what is appropriate. Clothing that works well for the beach, yard work, dance clubs, exercise sessions, and sports may not be appropriate for a professional casual appearance at work.

Clothing that reveals too much cleavage, your back, your chest, your stomach, your legs, or your underwear is not appropriate for a place of business.  Leggings may be worn with tunic length tops. Torn, dirty, or frayed clothing is unacceptable.

Casual Attire Recommendations

DSPs shall wear clothing that is comfortable and practical for work, but not distracting or offensive to others. Any clothing that has words, terms, or pictures that may be offensive to other employees is unacceptable. Sports team, university, and fashion brand names on clothing are generally acceptable.

Shoes and Footwear

Conservative athletic or walking shoes, loafers, sneakers, boots, flats, and leather deck-type shoes are acceptable for work. Shoes/boots with steel toes or cleats, and slippers are not acceptable on the job. Closed toed, flat shoes are recommended for safety.

Hats and Head Covering

Hats are not appropriate in the day support center but may be appropriate for community outings or field trips. Head Covers that are required for religious purposes or to honor cultural tradition are allowed at all times.

Makeup, Perfume, and Cologne

Remember that some employees/participants are allergic to the chemicals in perfumes and makeup, so wear these substances with restraint.

Dress Code for Public Interaction

Representing the Arc in the community, requires different decisions about attire.

Some community events, or meetings when you are representing the Arc, might require business attire. These might include civic or business meetings, luncheons, and dinners. Take your cue from other employees who have attended and be observant at the event. Certainly, if you are a speaker at a business event, business attire is required.

Employees shall exert a certain amount of judgment in their choice of clothing to wear to work. If you experience uncertainty about acceptable casual attire for work, please ask your supervisor.

If clothing fails to meet these standards, as determined by the employee’s supervisor the employee shall be asked not to wear the inappropriate item to work again. If the problem persists, the employee may be sent home to change clothes and shall receive a verbal warning for the first offense. Progressive performance improvement steps shall be applied if dress code violations continue.
