Position Description

Development Director


Classification: Fulltime, Salaried

Reports To: Executive Director


Position Overview: The Development Director shall increase revenue for and community awareness of The Arc’s mission of full inclusion and participation of people with developmental disabilities in the community throughout their lifetimes.

The Development Director shall work with the Executive Director, The Communications Director, and the fundraising and marketing committees and task forces of the Board of Directors to define and meet short- and long-term fundraising and public awareness goals and cultivate volunteer and funding resources to benefit programs and services of The Arc.

In Fundraising

  1. Solicit individual and corporate gifts and sponsorships through personal contact
  2. Design and implement an annual giving campaign
  3. Develop and grow a major gifts program
  4. Plan and coordinate Special Events in partnership with the Executive Director and Special Events Committee:
    1. Run Walk ‘n Roll: logistics, secure sponsors, bands, donors, volunteers
    2. Opening Doors: secure doors, sponsors, auction items, volunteers
    3. Arctoberfest: Logistics, secure sponsors, bands, donors, volunteers
    4. Other special events as needed
  5. In collaboration with the Communications Director, develop marketing and publicity materials for fundraising events
  6. Know and follow the principles of ethical fundraising contained in the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Principles and Standards and Bill of Rights.

In Friendraising, the Development Director will:

  1. Develop, maintain, and grow relationships with prospective donors and members
  2. Grow the Arc’s membership program
  3. Plan and implement annual appreciation events for donors and members
  4. Ensure that gifts are acknowledged in writing in accordance with The Arc’s policies and practices
  5. Identify and represent the agency at public awareness events

In Public Awareness, the Development Director will:

  1. Create a professional network of individuals and businesses that can support the agency’s development efforts
  2. Organize, attend, and ensure volunteer staffing for public awareness and fundraising events
  3. In collaboration with the Communications director, design marketing and publicity materials for disability awareness events/campaigns for print, broadcast, and electronic media
  4. Review and edit the quarterly print and electronic newsletters
  5. Speak on behalf of The Arc at civic group meetings or other public events as needed
