Recruitment and Hiring

In accordance with standards set by our licensing body, The Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services of the Commonwealth of Virginia and as a best practice, The Arc screens all potential employees in direct consumer care, and contractors and volunteers in unsupervised direct consumer care for barrier crimes as listed in the Code of Virginia §37.2-416.

The Arc intends to recruit, hire, and place applicants on the basis of the applicant’s relative education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The decision to employ an applicant shall be based solely on the individual’s qualification for the particular position along with other requisite job skills. Minimum qualifications shall be specified in the job description.

Each job announcement shall identify the position’s responsibilities and overall relationship to The Arc. It shall be posted or circulated within the organization and for public notification.

Persons employed by The Arc shall receive a salary negotiated at the time of an offer of employment. At the time of hire, new employees shall receive:

(1) A letter of hire,

(2) A job description,

 (3) Salary and benefits eligibility, and (4) a copy of the personnel policies. The scope of responsibility for the position is to be fully discussed at time of hire.

Probationary Period

New employees are subject to a probationary period of three (3) months. If performance during the probationary period proves to be unsatisfactory, employment may be terminated without prejudice.
